The 3 main concerns are that:

a) the dope hasn't glued the surround to the baffle in rear mounted configurations(moot for a model 19 or 4312)

b) enough dope remains on the surround to maintain airtightness, if the surround "breathes" it will affect tuning.

c) the dope isn't creating a "stiff" area on the surround.

Beyond those 3 points it's mainly a cosmetic thing.
